HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN REED DIFFUSERS

I love a reed diffuser to scent a room. The reeds draw up the liquid and allow it to diffuse into a room — no electricity or heat needed so altogether safer than candles too. There are so many natural options out there and they require zero effort, but did you know they’re also super easy to DIY? These homemade diffusers are lovely around your home or as a gift for anyone in your life — along with an essential oil blend and a fancy ribbon. Here’s how to do it.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • A reed diffuser bottle — use one from an old diffuser you’ve finished, or get inventive and repurpose old glass bottles, jars and even bud vases, or you can buy new ones

  • Your favourite essential oils — be sure to choose pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrances, and remember that different oils have different mood-enhancing properties

  • Reeds or bamboo skewers

  • Vodka

  • Water

  • Optional: decorative ribbon or label

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fill the bottle halfway with water.

  2. Add a few tablespoons of vodka.

  3. Now add your essential oils — 12 drops to each quarter cup of water.

  4. Mix well.

  5. Place your reeds or skewers into the filled bottle, trimming them if need be. Let them soak for a few minutes, then turn them back around for an instant aroma.

  6. Once a week or for an aroma boost (say guests are arriving), turn them back around to allow the fragrance to fill the air.

Troubleshooting: if after a while you find the fragrance not as effective, you might want to use new reeds or skewers as they might be so saturated that their ability to draw up the scent reduces.
