#FASHIONOURFUTURE SUSTAINABLE PLEDGES
I love a sustainable fashion initiative. It’s incredibly heartening to see more and more individuals, personalities and organisations commit to eco fashion, when just 5 years ago, this might have been seen as a hippy-dippy or niche thing to do. There’s Livia Firth at Eco Age, the Fashion Revolution challenge, Fashion Revolution Week, the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, Love Not Landfill, and now #FashionOurFuture.
#FashionOurFuture was founded by Amy Powney, who is the creative director over at Mother of Pearl. The initiative is meant to unite fashion lovers in a shared goal to protect the environment, and does so through a series of pledges that anyone can take by following some simple steps and uploading that pledge to Insta Stories. There are nine pledges total, each endlessly personalisable — here’s a little bit about each one.
OAP: Old Age Purchaser. This one is for fashionistas who can’t get enough of vintage, which is a super easy way to minimise our carbon footprint by increasing the number of times a single garment is worn.
This is all about reducing your cotton consumption, and choosing organic cotton whenever possible.
Pledge to stop purchasing (or reduce how much you purchase) plastic and polyester clothing and accessories, as these materials harm our planet and our oceans.
This one is about committing to renting, sharing and swapping clothes to reduce the number of newly made pieces being purchased.
Feminism has everything to do with fashion, and with sustainability. This pledge centres around protecting female garment workers around the world who are often exploited within fast fashion, and choosing ethical labels instead.
Viscose is made from trees, so this one is about making sure your viscose garments are sustainably sourced and not endangering forests.
Don’t throw out your clothes the second they get a hole or look a bit worn! Fix them or upcycle them instead.
Protect animal rights by pledging to not purchase from brands who practise animal cruelty to create their clothing.
Have you ever heard someone say they couldn’t possibly wear an outfit again, because they’d already worn it at the last event, or they’d already posted an Insta in it? Let’s change that! This pledge is about wearing something loads of times and shouting it on the rooftops.
