Welcome to my party season dress-up guide, the sustainable way. Part one: rental.

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been waxing lyrical on the perks of renting as opposed to always buying clothing, but no occasion lends itself to it better than parties and dressy events. It’s become the norm of late to buy a new party dress for each and every occasion, even more so due to Instagram, as people don’t want to be seen in the same outfit more than once.

The joy of fashion for me is finding new and innovative ways to wear existing pieces (whether my wardrobe, my other half’s or my friends’!) and I have cherished some of my clothes for years, even decades. That said, as a lover of fashion, I have to admit to the fun of slipping into something new and feeling fabulous. Well let me tell you, it’s the same feeling I get from a rented outfit, which I then get to send back so it can continue to play its part in cyclical fashion for the next user.

Instagram has also created another phenomenon: the “must-have” piece — an item you see time and time again on the platform’s most stylish accounts and that you suddenly find yourself daydreaming about while you’re in line at the post office or while you’re making dinner. Well this is definitely an urge that can be easily remedied by rental!

Here I am doing just that in this season’s must-have Christmas party dress from ROTATE Birger Christensen and the cult mini-bag from influencer favourite Jacquemus, both rented from By Rotation, aka the “Airbnb of fashion,” which means these are items rented from people’s own wardrobes. This is also an easy way to make a bit of cash on the side and get your pieces to pay for themselves! I’ve paired the dress with statement shoes from sustainable brand Beyond Skin, the first independent British luxury vegan footwear brand dedicated to designing cruelty-free luxury shoes for fashionable and ethically conscious women. What items have you been coveting and what do you think of rental?
