WHY TONGUE SCRAPING IS THE FIRST THING I DO EVERY MORNING - STYLIST

Back in November, I spoke at Stylist Live in London about Ayurveda, wellbeing and my daily habits. One of the things that people were really surprised about was tongue scraping, a key part of my morning ritual. After the event, the magazine published a lovely article about my advice — read on to find out about tongue scraping and more!

EXCERPT FROM STYLIST:

Jasmine Hemsley is an author, chef and entrepreneur with influence well beyond the culinary world, but there’s no denying that her widespread popularity is due, in part, to her emphasis on conscious, healthy and joyful living.

The influencer – who spoke to rapturous applause at Stylist Live 2017 – has inspired a global audience to shift their perspectives on food as a founder of Hemsley + Hemsley.

So, when she decided to share her morning routine with Stylist readers, you can bet that they sat up and paid attention.

However, they were possibly a little perturbed when Hemsley revealed that, every single morning, she scrapes her tongue with a special scraping device.

“The first thing I do is scrape my tongue,” she told the Stylist Live crowd on Friday (10 November). “It’s an Ayurvedic practice.”

If you are not familiar with the practice, it’s worth noting that, in the Charaka Samhita (an early Ayurvedic text), it says that cleaning the tongue “removes foul smell, tastelessness… and by taking out dirt coated on the tongue, teeth and mouth brings relish immediately.”

Hemsley, as well as many of those who clean their tongue on a daily basis, cites the invigorating effects this practice has; by removing the coating and stimulating the tongue you are helping “to balance the heavy and dulling qualities of Kapha dosha in your physiology”
